The Student Leadership and Ethics Board of the Sanford C. Bernstein & Co. Center for Leadership and Ethics is thrilled to host a conversation with Emily Portney ’01, Chief Financial Offer of BNY Mellon, a 237-year-old publicly listed company. This discussion will examine the role of values-based leadership in the financial services industry, the impact of ethical decision-making, and the cross-section of personal values and professional work.

This event is part of the Phillips Pathway for Inclusive Leadership (PPIL), focusing on the essential inclusive leadership skills of Creating an Inclusive Environment, and Understanding Identity and Perspective Taking.

About the Speaker:


Emily is BNY Mellon’s Chief Financial Officer, responsible for our global financial strategy and finance functions, including controllership, business CFO teams, treasury, capital management, tax, corporate development, investor relations, procurement and real estate. Emily is a member of our Executive Committee.

Previously, Emily led the global client management, sales and service teams for BNY Mellon’s Asset Servicing business, which provides investment administration, and operational and technology solutions to alternative investment managers, asset managers, asset owners, insurance companies, banks and broker-dealers. She also oversaw the Americas region for the Asset Servicing business.

Prior to joining BNY Mellon, Emily was CFO for Barclays International, where she helped to establish the non-ring-fenced bank, and led a global organization spanning the Corporate and Investment Bank, the Private Bank, and the Cards and Payments businesses. Emily began her career with JP Morgan, where she held various leadership roles, including global head of Clearing and Collateral Management, a brokerage unit that provided agency execution, clearing, and collateral management services across derivatives and securities markets worldwide. She also served as CFO of Equities and Prime Services.

Emily is a member of the board of directors for MarketAxess, a publicly traded corporation. She holds a Master of Business Administration from Columbia Business School and a bachelor’s degree from Duke University.
