As part of Leadership and Ethics Week, the Student Leadership and Ethics Board of the Sanford C. Bernstein & Co Center for Leadership and Ethics invites you to a panel discussion with representatives from the hospitality and retail industries on navigating the challenges of the past year with Covid-19. These industry leaders will speak to their experiences pivoting their businesses, largely dependent on in-person interaction, to new models while addressing:

  • Adjusting business strategies while maintaining alignment with organizational mission and values.
  • Managing the employee value proposition as well as layoffs during these turbulent times.
  • Navigating legal shutdown mandates, updated safety requirements, and added protections for employee safety.

  • Corey Smith '01, Head of Diversity and Inclusion, North America at LVMH
  • Stephen Zagor, Adjunct Assistant Professor in Management, Columbia Business School (Moderator)

About Patti Simpson:


Patti Simpson is the Chief People Officer of Union Square Hospitality Group (USHG) and oversees all Human Resource operations. In her role, Patti implements key systems and benefits that align with USHG’s Family Values (excellence, hospitality, entrepreneurial spirit, and integrity) to further enhance USHG’s philosophy of Enlightened Hospitality, the belief that putting employees first is the key to running a meaningful and sustainable business.

Patti joins USHG with a deeply rooted background in HR, where she has led HR operations for various domestic and international foodservice brands such as TGI Fridays, Ignite Restaurant Group (Joe’s Crab Shack, Brick House Tavern + Tap), Au Bon Pain, and most recently Ruby Tuesday.

Having grown up in Wayne, Pennsylvania, a small town outside of Philadelphia, Patti holds a bachelor’s degree in special education from Cabrini College and is certified by the HRCI (Human Resource Certification Institute), SPHR (Senior Professional in Human Resources), as well as SHRM – SCP (Society for Human Resource Management – Senior Certified Professional).

About Corey Smith '01:


Corey Smith is currently Vice President of Diversity & Inclusion at LVMH Inc. Prior to joining LVMH in September of 2020, Corey was Head of Diversity & Inclusion at Major League Baseball. With over 20 years in Diversity & Inclusion (D&I), Corey has worked in several industries including manufacturing, technology, education, consumer products, entertainment, media and sports. Mr. Smith’s overall D&I experience includes creating inclusive hiring programs designed to recruit a more diverse talent pipeline as well as implementing internal workforce initiatives for the equitable growth and advancement of internal talent. In addition to internal initiatives, Corey has led external D&I strategies focused on diversifying customer engagement, growth marketing strategies and experiential activations focused on inclusion. Corey has also created Supplier Diversity initiatives to be more inclusive in corporate supply chain creating economic impact for diverse businesses.

Mr. Smith has served on several boards including Diversity Information Resources (DIR) and served as Board Chair for the NY/NJ Minority Supplier Development Council. Mr. Smith holds a BS in Mechanical Engineering and a MBA, both from Columbia University.
