As part of the Reuben Mark Leadership Luncheon Series, Columbia Business and Law Schools will proudly host Tim Murphy, General Counsel of Mastercard in conversation with Professor Geoffrey Heal. The discussion will center on the role of business in society and will address the opportunities and challenges corporations face in navigating an increasingly complex social, political, and regulatory landscape. Tim will specifically speak to Mastercard’s commitment to driving social purpose in business, and will share how the company seeks to forge a path of sustainability, decency and inclusion (while meeting and beating the Street’s expectations).


About the Speaker:


Tim Murphy is general counsel for Mastercard. In this capacity, he oversees legal affairs, public policy, corporate governance and compliance. He is also responsible for Mastercard’s franchise, corporate security, privacy and global inclusion teams. Mr. Murphy is a member of the company’s Management Committee.

Prior to assuming this role, Mr. Murphy was chief product officer, where he was responsible for the development and management of payment solutions creating sustainable advantage for Mastercard and its customers.

Throughout his tenure, Mr. Murphy has also served as president of the company’s U.S. region, executive vice president of customer business planning and analysis, and senior vice president and associate general counsel for Mastercard.

Before joining Mastercard in 2000, he was an associate in the New York and London offices of Cleary, Gottlieb, Steen & Hamilton, an international law firm.

Mr. Murphy is a member of the board of trustees for the National Urban League, the board of directors for the U.S.-Russia Business Council and the board of directors for the Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship. Mr. Murphy also serves as chairman of the board of governors for Fairfield College Preparatory School. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.

Mr. Murphy was named a Legend in Law in 2018 by the Burton Foundation.

He received a JD degree, magna cum laude, from Harvard Law School and a BA degree in political science from Amherst College.
