As part of the Under The Tree Series, the Student Leadership and Ethics Board of the Sanford C. Bernstein & Co. Center for Leadership and Ethics invites you to join a luncheon and interactive group discussion on the economic, political, and social forces that have led to the current global housing crisis. Led by Professor Stijn Van Nieuwerburgh, who will testify about the advantages and costs of rent control in front of the New Jersey control board this month, the discussion will draw from current events while examining the historical contexts that have brought us to this moment. Unpacking the shift in the conversation around exploding rents, decreasing housing stock, stagnant wages, and the public policies that will shape the future of real estate in America’s biggest urban centers, the goal is to spark a provocative dialogue around housing, ownership, development and the ethical dilemma that besets our society when the rent is just too damn high.

Pre-Reading for Discussion:

About Under The Tree Series

The Student Leadership & Ethics Board has initiated the UTT platform to encourage engaging group discussions among students about the subtle interweaving of ethics and leadership among different industries and topics of interest. Some examples of topics include: ‘Responsible use of customer’s data' and ‘Ethical boundaries on exercising power and influence as a leader.’ These discussions are led by a faculty member and are held in small groups of 10-12 CBS students.

This event is co-sponsored by Real Estate Association as marketing partner.
